Severe Osteoporosis in an Eating Disorder Patient
Keywords:
osteoporosis, eating disorder, fragility fracture.Abstract
Osteoporosis secondary to eating disorders occurs early, it is severe, and it carries high risk of fracture. Among the factors that most impact the loss of bone mass is the duration of amenorrhea and the eating disorder. The objective of this article is to describe the clinical case of a patient who, related to an undiagnosed eating disorder, suffered multiple fragility fractures (vertebral crushing, rib and calcaneus fractures). Emphasis is placed on the current evidence on medical treatment for osteoporosis in this group of patients. In conclusion, a multidisciplinary approach including nutritional rehabilitation and osteoporosis screening is recommended for all patients with eating disorders to prevent future fragility fractures.
