Rehabilitation treatment in patients with multiple sclerosis in Cienfuegos

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is an entity that causes significant reduction in quality of life. Although there are countless drugs on the market, most are expensive for patients, so physical therapy and rehabilitation appears as an option.
Objective: To present the usefulness of rehabilitation treatment in patients with multiple sclerosis in the province of Cienfuegos.
Methods: A quasi-experimental, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out, with a scheme before and after rehabilitation treatment in patients with multiple sclerosis. Fifteen patients who underwent a program that included physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, and transcranial magnetic fields were included.
Results: The most frequent topographies were found in the long roads with 93.3%; the mean age was 42 ± 10.5 and lower in women 40 ± 10.5; the evolution time in years was 11.1 ± 5.9; and the mean of the crises, 6.8 ± 2.1. The total number of seizures before treatment was 1.93 ± 1.22 and 1.13 ± 0.64 after one year, p ˂ 0.001. There was also significance between disability scales: the Kurske scale before treatment showed 3.50 ± 1.9 and after it 1.60 ± 0.9, p ˂ 0.001.
Conclusions: The rehabilitation program implemented in patients with multiple sclerosis decreases the number of crises and the score of the functional scales.
