Introduction: Joint lavage and arthroscopic debridement, as minimal access surgery, can be considered as a therapeutic alternative for osteoarthritis.
Objective: To determine the quality of life of patients with knee OA treated by joint lavage and arthroscopic debridement.
Methods: A prospective study was carried out in 115 patients with knee osteoarthritis at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital from January 2016 to January 2017.
Results: The predominant age was the fifth decade of life and the female sex was the most affected. The time from the first symptoms to the treatment was between 12 and 24 months (41.7%) and more than 24 months (42.6%). The patient's health status, according to the visual analogue scale, showed moderate compromise in more than 50% and poor health status with significant impact on the quality of life in 44.3% before surgery. When applying WOMAC functional assessment scale in osteoarthritis, 58.3% of the patients had severe disability before performing the arthroscopy. One year after the treatment, they were reassessed with WOMAC, and they had 93.3% improvement in functional knee disability and 66.1% mild disability.
Conclusions: Arthroscopic lavage and debridement positively impacted on improving the perception of the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis by improving functional capacity and the degree of their functional disability.Downloads
