Introduction: The accreditation of educational institutions and units is a process of compliance with quality indicators that allows public certification that an institution has the minimum requirements to efficiently develop a process of academic training and professional improvement. The University of Medical Sciences of Holguín (UCMHo) assumes the quality management of the training processes as an institutional strategy; henceforth, the self-assessment process of the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation was organized.
Objective: To offer a protocol to measure the impact of the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
Methods: A documentary and bibliographic search was carried out from March 2020 to March 2021, which included several national and international databases and institutional archives. In addition, surveys carried out on users of the rehabilitation service in the last five years were examined, taking the Rehabilitation Service of Pedro del Toro Sad University Polyclinic as a prototype.
Results: Three dimensions were designed, each one with the indicators and measurement criteria: dimension 1- of teacher preparation, scientific assistance and research of the faculty; dimension 2- continuous teaching, care and research training of residents and graduates; and dimension 3- teaching assistance.
Conclusions: The protocol responds to the need to have an instrument for measuring the impact of the physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty. That is, dimension 1 established the verification of the first level of impact; dimension 2 recognized the verification of the second level of impact, which arose as a consequence of the first level; and dimension 3 documented the verification of the third level of impact generated by the program, which resulted from the previous levels (impact impact).
