Comparative Study of Coping and Stressors between Epileptic and Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures

Introduction: Research that attempts to compare the coping and stressors of patients with epileptic seizures (ES) and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNEC) report divergent and insufficient results.
Objective: To identify the differences in coping and stressors between patients with ES and PNEC.
Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional and prospective study of 38 patients (15 with ES and 23 with PNEC) was carried out. All were evaluated in the Neuropsychology and Neurophysiology Services at the International Center for Neurological Restoration from January 2001 to February 2018. A structured interview and a coping questionnaire (Brief Cope) were applied. Non-parametric statistics were used with statistical significance p ≤ 0.05.
Results: Significant differences were found between the groups in age (p = 0.04), stressors (p = 0.02) and coping (p = 0.001). Positive relationship between age and coping was identified in the group with PNEC (r = 0.48). No differences were found in coping and stressors between hypermotor and hypomotor PNEC (p > 0.05).
Conclusions: Coping styles, stressors, and unequal age range were found between ES and PNEC. Coping was found to be related to age in the group with PNEC. It was found that the type of PNEC does not influence coping or stressors in this casuistry. The methodology used is a useful tool to discriminate from the psychological point of view and to program specific intervention strategies in patients with CE and NECC.
