Abstract

Introduction: Repetitive hand movements are frequently associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, a neuropathy of the median nerve.

Objective: To determine the relationship between Boston Questionnaire, suggestive symptoms, and clinical procedures for the timely diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome in general office assistants at the Mexican Social Security Institute, General Hospital Zone No. 20, La Margarita, Puebla, Mexico.

Methods: Boston Questionnaire was applied, consisting of 11 items that demonstrated high internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.90); the data obtained were recorded in spreadsheets for analysis.

Results: A significant statistical association was found between Phalen (p = 0.000), Durkan (p = 0.001), and Tinel (p = 0.002) maneuvers and symptom severity according to Boston Score.

Conclusions: The combination of these tools proved to be essential for identifying patients with this condition and allowing for early treatment.
