Abstract

Introduction: Patients with dysphonia consult the Internet in search of information about their disease, which improves their adherence to treatment and leads to greater global knowledge through online information, however it may not be of quality.

Objective: To identify the reliability of online medical information about dysphonia consulted by patients suffering from this disease.

Methods: Access to online information of dysphonic patients was analyzed according to type of dysphonia, age, sex, educational level and terms used to search on Google®. Five independent evaluators applied DISCERN instrument to 60 websites to assess their quality and it was completed with an analysis of interclass correlation and coefficient of variation.

Results: 80% of patients consulted the Internet. Their average age was 47.8 years (SD: 18.2), 30% were men and 76.7% had education. DISCERN data expressed as median (interquartile range) resulted for health centers 41.1 (7.6), professional societies or patient associations 44.9 (22.3), government agencies or public entities 47.3 (12. 4), health press 40 (2.3) and others 42.1 (17.7). According to the standards of the DISCERN questionnaire, the information consulted was categorized as excellent or good, the type of website was average, bad or very bad for health centers (93.8%), societies or associations (73.9%), government (68.4%), press (98.7%) and others (97.6%). Interclass correlation index was 0.697 and the coefficient of variation was 21%.

Conclusions: Most patients consult the Internet to learn about their disease, but the information available there is of low quality and could improve if criteria such as those of DISCERN instrument were followed when creating its contents.
